Bathroom Decluttering - Sell a Home - Watson Realty

Bathrooms are essential spaces for health and hygiene, but it can be difficult to keep them clean and organized with daily use. When our agents show new listings, buyers often see bathrooms overflowing with hair and skincare products, cosmetics, toiletries, and cleaners. Although these may be essential items for the homeowner, the only thing buyers see is clutter.

Buyers looking for Bakersfield homes for sale want to see clean, organized rooms that reflect a comfortable, inviting home. If you're thinking about selling your home, it may be time to declutter your bathroom and show potential buyers a tidy, organized space with a relaxing vibe.

  • Organize the Linen Closet
While some linen closets are in the bathroom, others may be in a nearby hallway or bedroom. Either way, you can be assured that buyers will open them to inspect the storage space. Before they do, take the time to organize your blankets, quilts, throws, bed linens, towels and washcloths, and any other items you store in your linen closet. For a fresh, inviting smell, hang potpourri on small closet hooks.

  • Tidy Up Cabinets and Drawers
If you're like most homeowners, your vanity cabinets and drawers are probably filled with things you don't even know you have. Since most bathrooms have limited storage space, cabinets and drawers are used for bathroom essentials like toilet paper, soap, hairdryers, hair products, cosmetics, and bathroom cleaners. Go through your cabinets and drawers and create neat, organized areas that don't look messy.

    • Cabinets – Cabinets under the sink are good for storing bathroom cleaning products, as well as extra bottles of shampoo and hair products. Storing items in a bin, basket, or caddy will create a neat appearance and prevent leaks and spills in the cabinet.
    • Drawers – Drawers are usually used to store smaller items like toothpaste, extra toothbrushes, hairbrushes and combs, razors, grooming tools, and beauty supplies. For better organization, group similar items in each drawer and use drawer organizers to prevent loose clutter.

  • Clear Off the Countertop
For a tidy bathroom, limit your vanity countertop to a few items. This will keep the countertop cleaner and eliminate a cluttered look. When organizing, it's best to keep items close to where they will be used. For example, hand soap should go right next to the sink, while perfumes and colognes should be displayed further away. To keep things neat and organized, purchase a decorative tray, basket, or container to hold your countertop essentials.

  • Purchase Shower and Bathtub Holders
Whether you prefer quick showers or long, relaxing baths, you likely keep a variety of products in the shower or around the tub. Rather than sitting shampoos and soaps on the shower floor, invest in a shower caddy that will hang over the shower nozzle or sit on the floor. If you like taking baths, find a decorative soap holder and a container that will fit in one corner of the bathtub. For relaxing scents, don't forget a few beautiful candles.

  • Throw Out Expired Products
It's time to go through your cabinets, drawers, and medicine cabinets and get rid of everything that's expired or just hasn't been used for the last year. If you have expired prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, old cosmetics, or potentially harmful products like drain cleaners and cleaning products, throw them away with caution. Many communities offer safe drop-off locations for products that may harm people, pets, or the environment.
