While Shift10 Day was officially recognized on Oct. 10, you can still celebrate it by shifting 10% of your spending to local businesses. Doing so allows you to help support the local companies that keep our community vibrant. Bakersfield is home to hundreds of lovely, locally-owned businesses, but here are a few that our agents especially recommend.
- Five and Dime Antique Mall: 1400 19th Street, Bakersfield, CA 93301
Five and Dime Antique Mall is an antique shop inside Woolworth's. It won the award for Best Antique Dealer five years in a row. The store sells on consignment and has a little of everything, from furniture to antique dinnerware. It's a great place to shop for a gift or furnish your home. Visiting Five and Dime Antique Mall feels like stepping back in time. There's even an old-fashioned luncheon counter where you can grab a bite to eat.
- H. Walker's: 1700 K. Street, Bakersfield, CA 93301
If you're looking for fashionable menswear, then H. Walker's is the perfect place to visit. This store specializes in fashion-forward, designer apparel for men with busy lifestyles. H. Walker's was founded by Herb Walker in 1971, and it has been a Bakersfield mainstay ever since. They offer custom tailoring and gift wrapping, and you can even make an appointment for a private shopping experience.
- Bella: 8200 Stockdale Hwy., Suite D6, Bakersfield, CA 93311
Bella is a women's clothing boutique that opened in 1999. They carry brands such as Bella White Label, Free People, and For Love & Lemons. Their accessory options are extensive, too. The employees at Bella are really helpful and can assist you in discovering your own personal style. If you're buying for someone else, they'll happily gift wrap your order.
- Russo's Books: 1601 New Stine Rd., #182, Bakersfield, CA 93303
If you're a bookworm or know someone who is, then Russo's Books is a great shop to support any day of the year. They opened in 1989 and still operate out of their original storefront. If you don't find what you want in their store, they can order it for you. Russo's is owned by the Russo Family, and they only hire other book lovers. So, when you step into the store, you can count on the employees to give you a great recommendation.
- Bakersfield Skateboard Company: 4550 Coffee Rd., Suite J, Bakersfield, CA 93308
Skateboarders love Bakersfield Shakeboard Company, and for good reason. This locally-owned shop stocks the best skateboards and skating accessories. They carry premium brands along with smaller, local ones. The atmosphere at Bakersfield Skateboard Company is also fun and low-key. The shop itself is bright pink, and the employees are all knowledgeable skaters.
- Bakersfield Vintage: 1918 Eye St., Bakersfield, CA 93309
Bakersfield Vintage is a consignment store that sells a bit of everything, from clothing to collectibles. You'll even find some vintage toys on their shelves. This would be a great store to shop for gifts, or even for some unique clothes to wear to a party. You could spend an afternoon just looking through the board games!
