From first-time buyers to empty nesters scaling down, many new homeowners are faced with the same frustrating challenge: where to store all of this stuff! Our agents have a few suggestions to help maximize the space and keep clutter at bay.
- Versatile bookshelves
Some of our Bakersfield homes for sale may already have built-in bookshelves, but even if they don't, free-standing bookcases are a great way to store a lot more than books. They can serve double duty by offering space for plants and knick-knacks. If you want built-in shelves, but your budget won't support such an extensive project, consider creating a mock version by adding decorative molding. With a little bit of paint and a few hours of work, your shelving will look like the elegant architectural feature you wanted. You can put small bookcases on top of refurbished cabinets painted to match to add a place to stash items not meant for display. It's always a good idea to anchor the shelves to the wall so they don't tip with excessive weight.
- A storage bench
By padding a storage bench for comfort, you can eliminate a second sofa while adding a significant amount of storage space. This idea works especially well beneath bay windows to create a comfortable reading nook. You'll be surprised at how relaxing the space becomes. Some benches are already upholstered and carry a price tag far below built-in benches. You can store throws and pillows completely out of sight as well as games, puzzles, magazines, or even toys.
- Ottoman with a removable top
Combine comfort with practicality with a gorgeous ottoman that matches your couch. They come in all colors, materials, and styles to complement your decor while cleverly hiding blankets, books, and more. Slip off your shoes and prop up your feet while you watch the game on TV. If you want the living room to be as comfortable as it is elegant, an ottoman is a terrific option. Some are designed to serve as a coffee table, as well.
- Lift-top coffee table
These stylish accessories often feature shelves or drawers below the table in addition to the hidden compartment revealed when you lift the lid. Increase the storage available on the shelves by adding baskets to hold everything from craft items like knitting or embroidery to books and spare game controllers. They can solve the mystery of the missing remote controller by giving it a home! Some tops are designed to increase the height of the tabletop to create a workspace for laptops and homework. A lift-top coffee table is one of the more affordable options for additional storage space.
- Baskets
Attractive and affordable, baskets can turn any spare space into storage. From under the coffee table to on shelves to sitting on the floor next to the couch, they can fit almost anywhere and can hold almost anything. They're the perfect solution for a plethora of dog toys, paperbacks, magazines, and a whole host of items that tend to clutter the living room. It's so easy to clean when all you have to do is pitch each item into its appropriate basket. You can even find them with lids to hide the items from view. When you carefully select color and style, your baskets will be lovely accessories to your existing decor.
